custom street signs, sign posts, custom aluminum shoulder harnesses, performers
Two red and white "YOU ARE HER" signs were installed on campus at Texas Christian University in the fall of 2018. These signs were intended to help people navigate the present political moment, provoking conversations about gender identity, empathy and consent. Red, yellow and black exclamation mark or “incident” signs were worn by female performers to visualize the statistics of sexual assaults against women on college campuses. Performers stood wearing the signs, both individually and in groups, in various locations on campus nearly every day over the course of the exhibition. The work challenged people to identify where we are as a society and how far we still have to go to create a world that is safer and more equitable for women.
This project was commissioned by Fort Worth Contemporary Arts at Texas Christian University, in conjunction with Flâneuse, a group exhibition that examined the role of gender in contemporary urban experience. Photography by Lynné Bowman Cravens.
