The words in this sign flash on and off to alternate between two statements: “Now is only for the time being,” and “Now is always for the time becoming.” The text is inspired by Plato’s writings on the difference between "being" (ideas that are eternal, absolute and unchanging) and "becoming" (things that are physical, material, and ephemeral).
The site for this Nasher Public commission is a lot next to 2000 Ross Avenue in Dallas, a multi-use development that will include six ground floor restaurants and a 283 room JW Marriott Hotel. At the busy intersection of Ross and Olive Streets in downtown Dallas, a burgeoning extension of the Dallas Arts District, the sign heralds the possibilities of new public space, commerce, and civic growth that enrich the urban experience.
This project was sponsored by Trammel Crow Center, J.P. Morgan, and Stream Realty Partners.
